A Basic Sketch For Arduino (Uno R3) Using The Seeed Studio Sensor Kit Base

------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you ever heard of Arduino®? It is a microcontroller that helps you do many things such as robotics.

Recently, I have been tinkering with the Arduino Uno R3 and the Arduino Sensor Kit from Seeed Studio. Since it's almost 2024 (Yay!) and the blog hasn't seen any new posts recently, I thought this was the perfect way to get back to it.

What will you need?

 You will need the following components for this project.
  • Arduino Uno R3 Board
  • Arduino Sensor Kit Base (from Seeed Studio)

 A note about the Sensor Kit's contents:

               The Sensor Kit from Seeed Studio includes the following:

    1. LED
    2. Buzzer/Piezo (used in this project)
    3. OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) Display, 128×64 dots (used in this project)
    4. Button
    5. Rotary Potentiometer
    6. Light Sensor
    7. Sound Sensor
    8. Temperature and Humidity Sensor
    9. Air Pressure Sensor
    10. Acceleration/Movement Sensor
    11. Some wires to connect the sensors to the base (everything is already connected inside, but to be able to hear the audio, you need to connect the buzzer to D8.)

That's all you need!

What to Wire

Wired setup:
Connect the buzzer to D8 for this particular sketch, even though the board says D5.

Code

Download the Arduino IDE on your PC/laptop. Make sure your Arduino is connected. (On Windows the port is COM5; on Linux/Ubuntu it's dev/ttyACM0.) Copy in the following code:

The Sketch (click on the drop-down to view)

#include <Wire.h>
#include <Adafruit_SSD1306.h>
#include <Adafruit_GFX.h>

// things include for audio
#include "pitches.h"

// OLED specs
#define OLED_WIDTH 128
#define OLED_HEIGHT 64
#define OLED_ADDR 0x3C

Adafruit_SSD1306 display(OLED_WIDTH, OLED_HEIGHT);

// only for audio
int melody[] = {
  NOTE_C4, NOTE_CS4, NOTE_D4, NOTE_DS4, NOTE_E4, NOTE_F4, NOTE_FS4, NOTE_G4
};

// note durations: 4 = quarter note, 8 = eighth note, etc.:
int noteDurations[] = {
  4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4
};
int thisNote = 0;

void playMelody() {
  for(int thisNote = 0; thisNote < 8; thisNote++) {
    int noteDuration = 1000 / noteDurations[thisNote];
    tone(8, melody[thisNote], noteDuration);

    int pauseBetweenNotes = noteDuration * 1.30;
    delay(pauseBetweenNotes);

    noTone(8);
  }
}

// play melody 8 times function {if you want to change # of times melody plays}
void playMelody8Times() {
  for (int nTimes = 0; nTimes < 8; nTimes++) {
    playMelody();
    delay(5000);
  }
}

void setup() {
  display.begin(SSD1306_SWITCHCAPVCC, OLED_ADDR);
}

void loop() {

display.clearDisplay();

display.setTextSize(2);
display.setTextColor(WHITE);
display.setCursor(0, 10);
// Display static text
display.println("Happy");
display.println("   New");
display.println("     Year!");
display.display();
playMelody();

display.clearDisplay();

display.setTextSize(4);
display.setTextColor(WHITE);
display.setCursor(0, 10);
// Display static text
display.println(" 2024");
display.display();
playMelody();

display.clearDisplay();

display.setTextSize(3);
display.setTextColor(WHITE);
display.setCursor(0, 10);
// Display static text
display.println(". .");
display.println(" v");
display.display();
playMelody();
}

 The output panel should tell you that there is no pitches.h file. To solve this, create a new file in the same folder (I call mine arduino4 since it's my fourth Arduino program on this machine) and paste in the following code:

 Once you have gotten the error to stop appearing (it may take multiple tries), make sure the kit is wired correctly and enjoy!

Errors That May Occur With Tips To Fix Them

  • error: pitches.h: No such file or directory
    • This error can happen when you have said "#include" the file. In some cases, this means you do not have the library files in your computer. However, in our case, this means that the file is not in the same folder and not open in the same window. Try to put it in the same folder.
  • error: Attempt [] out of 10: programmer is not responding
    • I got this error multiple times. Although I don't know what the cause of it is, restarting the computer seemed to fix the issue.
